BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport CompletesMajor Runway Rehabilitation Project

Project Advances Moore-Miller Administration’s Emphasis to Enhance Safety, Modernize Transportation Infrastructure and Grow Maryland’s Economy

Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport today announced the successful completion of a major runway construction project. The full rehabilitation of Runway 10-28, the longest at BWI Marshall, is an important investment in the airport’s infrastructure that will help ensure safe, reliable and efficient operations for years to come. The runway was reopened this afternoon.

“The completion of this project showcases the Moore-Miller administration’s commitment to maintaining world-class transportation infrastructure to fuel Maryland’s economic growth,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Katie Thomson. “This project was a significant investment in the operation of BWI Marshall Airport that will benefit our passengers, airlines and the future of our region’s premier airport.”

The rehabilitation project included milling and paving the runway, along with the installation of a modern LED runway lighting system. Runway 10-28 is one of two commercial runways at BWI Marshall Airport. Throughout much of the construction, the airport’s other major runway was closed during overnight hours to accommodate paving work in the intersection of the two runways. The entire project was coordinated carefully with airport tenants including passenger airlines, cargo carriers and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

“We appreciate the work of our construction team, designers, airline partners and the MAA team and the entire airport community that helped us complete this critical project,” said Shannetta Griffin, Executive Director/CEO of the Maryland Aviation Administration. “As I emphasized at the start of construction this summer, this project promotes safety and enhances Maryland’s gateway and improves the heart of our airport.”

The FAA’s Infrastructure Grant program and the Maryland Transportation Trust Fund provided funding for the $83.8 million construction project which kicked off on July 22. BWI Marshall Airport served more than 25 million passengers in 2025 and offers approximately 300 daily nonstop departures to about 90 domestic and international destinations. BWI Marshall Airport generates a total economic impact of $11.5 billion, creating and supporting more than 117,000 jobs across Maryland and the region.
